    • Minimum Computer Standard
    MediaCAST is a Web-based software application that will run on most any modern computer operating system.

    For optimal performance, we recommend an operating system of Windows 2000, XP, or 2003, or well as Apple's MacOS X 10.2 or higher.

    The workstation should include a processor of 400 MHz or higher, sufficient RAM to run a first-tier Web browser (256MB), and a display set at 1024x768 (XGA) pixels or higher.

    Reference Computer Standard
    MediaCAST is developed first on the Windows platform and the Internet Explorer browser. Generally, it runs on any Windows based browser, such as Mozilla FireFox 1.0x, Netscape 7.0+, or Mozilla FireFox 1.7.

    Macintosh usability testing is done on an Apple Mac Mini with 1.4 GHz CPU, 256MB RAM and the latest Safari browser.

    The playing of media requires the installation of certain plug-ins or operating system-bundled software, such as Windows Media Player 10, Macromedia Flash, Real Player, etc.

    We have found that computers having an 800 MHz Pentium III CPU are sufficiently fast to run MediaCAST. While you may be able to get by with less CPU power, you should have at least 256MB RAM, as those plug-ins tend to need that much memory to run smoothly.

    Browser Requirements
    MediaCAST requires a modern Web browser, such as Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla FireFox 1.0x, Netscape 7/8, or Apple Safari 1.2. Other browsers may work, but functionality in certain areas may be reduced or impaired. To use MediaCAST as it was intended, the browser's settings must be configured to allow JavaScript, Java applets, ActiveX controls, and Macromedia Flash Objects. In addition, the browser must also allow the setting of a "cookie," as that is how the system tracks the user's progress through the various pages.

    Bandwidth
    MediaCAST has been purposefully designed to run over relatively slow connections. Using only minimal graphics and relying text links keep bandwidth usage at a minimum.

    However, when it comes time to play a streaming video file, we suggest that the user have a broadband connection of approximately 384KBit/sec. This is typically met by DSL, cable modem and fixed wireless connections, as well as access on an institution's local area network.

    If you do not meet the 384Kbit/sec benchmark, MediaCAST can be adapted to stream the video and audio files from a local source, such as a CD-ROM or USB key drive. Please contact your MediaCAST system administrator for more details about these options.
